The 4th Decennial Adventure of Bob & Jim

More happenstance than design has resulted in my friend Bob and I taking rather major vacations together every ten years (eleven in one instance).  When we recognized this pattern we decided that it was worth continuing the tradition and planned this trip.  It won't be as long or strenuous as those previous but I think it still qualifies.

1986

The trip that started it all was a mult-city European tour and our first venture out of North America. The sight of London rooftops as we rode the Tube from Heathrow had us giggling and smiling at the novelty.  From London we took a coach to Dover where we boarded an SR N4 Hovercraft to Calais where another coach brought us to Paris. We carried on from city to city visiting Amsterdam, Utrecht, Berlin (both West and East), Copenhagen, Malmö and Lund.

1997

The second adventure had us flying into Johannesburg where we explored South Africa by rental car from Capetown, through the wine district, along the south coast and up to Kruger Park.  We stayed in a number of National Parks including Karoo and TsiTsiKamma. The next phase was a flight to Windhoek where we picked up a rental 4WD truck and travelled up and down Namibia.

2007

Ten years later Brazil was the destination with a direct flight from Toronto to Sao Paulo. Architecture and art were the main themes of interest and the works of Oscar Niemeyer played a large part in our exploration. Travelling via rental car and GOL flights we made our way to Brasilia, Chapada dos Veadeiros National Park, Salvador da Bahia and Curitiba.  An excursion train, the Serra Verde Express brought us down to Morretes for a day.  A few days in Rio capped off this trip.

Which brings us to our fourth instalment...

2017

The plans involve a flight to Reykjavik, a rental car trip to Akureyri, a flight to Helsinki, a ferry ride to Tallinn, a short leg on a train to Turku where after a few days we will part company with Bob returning home while I start out on a bicycle tour of a number of islands in the Turku Archipelago.
I intend to create daily posts including photos and videos so watch this space starting the second week of June, 2017.
