The bus trip from Reykjavik to the airport in Keflavik is close to an hour and our flight was at the lower priced but unappealing 1:00 am. The airport gates do not have seats but expect passengers to stand in line for an extended period of time before scanning their boarding passes after a rather slow scanner/gate arrangement that favours technology over efficiency.
The cabin temperating in the Boeing 757 approximated that of a sauna and many passengers, including myself, were asking the cabin crew if it could be cooled. There was a small degree of temperature reduction but not enough to prevent me from hoping I wouldn't pass out and watching the time to arrival countdown to see if I could persevere.
The arrival was quick with an easy transition to the train to central Helsinki but arriving around 9:00 in a sleep-deprived delirious state had me sitting in the hotel lobby for hours until our room was ready.
When I finally got to the room I went to bed, went out for a rather excellent street vendor hamburger around 8:00 pm, then went back to bed for a good overnight sleep.
Today, Monday, Bob and I explored a number of museums, got transit passes and took the Metro, a tram and a streetcar to explore the city. Tomorrow's weather promises to be better and Wednesday ever more so. We intend to rent bicycles on Wednesday because there is an extensive bicycle path network throughout the city.
Here are a few photos of the past couple of days (credits to Bob, the official photographer);
