Reykjavik & Akureyri

We arrived in Keflavik Airport around 6:40 am and took the 50+km ride into Reykjavik to the bus station where we stowed our luggage.

I have left the photography to Bob because he takes thousands of pictures and there is no need for me following around and duplicating efforts. He's allowing me to share any of them that I wish and I'll be uploading them when things are a little less hectic.

By hectic I mean that we walked all over Rekyjavik from morning till 14:00 with very little sleep in the previous 24 hours, had supper and went to bed.

This morning we had to wake up early and walk with all our luggage for 4km to the rental car agency where we got a little Hyundai and drove up to Akureyri with all sorts of little side trips and photo ops along the way.

The highways in Iceland do not have shoulders and very little pull-over areas so a lazy sightsee can be trying.  We did however get on a few secondary roads and got to see some tremendous scenery.
The tunnel under the fjord was lots of fun.

We saw a few brave touring cyclists on the main highway but it's not a road I like driving on let alone cycling. After steady climb today we sailed down an 8% grade for a few kilometers.

We're now in Akureyri and have had a lovely little supper at a backpackers pub, walked around the botanical gardens (we had been through the botanical gardens in Reykjavik that morning as a sidelight of our walk to Budget Car Rental).

What one hears about prices is correct; an average entree costs 3500 ISK which is US$35 and I just filled up the little car with gas for 6250 ISK - US$62.  The upscale restaurants can have entrees that hit US $55.

The midnight sun is real. The view out of the plane never quite went dark and we had to close the curtains tight to sleep last night.

I'll update photos later,
Jim
